Solvent-cement contains several raw materials to optimize the pipe connection process. The following are the components of solvent-cement.

Main Components
Solvent
Functions to dissolve uPVC resin, expand uPVC, control evaporation, and lubricate the connection. These four functions work simultaneously when applied to uPVC pipe connections.

Cement
Functions to fill the gap between the outside diameter of the pipe and the inside diameter of the socket, allowing radial pressure to be generated along the joint.

How it works
When solvent-cement is applied, it works aggressively. Solvent-cement dissolves the uPVC resin, allowing it to penetrate deep into the pipe and fitting walls. This results in a bonded joint. Deep penetration results in a more perfect weld/joint. This depends on temperature and wall thickness. Too deep penetration can increase curing time or affect the integrity of the pipe/fitting. The difference between deep and shallow solvent penetration can be illustrated by the example of two wooden planks being nailed together.
